After our hike, we visited the Muir Woods Trading Cafe located towards the beginning of the park. The cafe is attached to a souvenir shop that had really interesting items that would be great for gift giving or to keep as souvenirs. From locally made jewelry, little seedlings that you can plant in your garden, to chocolates shaped like Banana Slugs. Outside there were wooden benches where people sat to rest, and enjoy their food.
In the cafe, you can order a variety of sandwiches and snacks, but their specialty was the Marin Melt that was featured on The Best Thing I Ever Ate on the Food Network. At first when we saw it, we were a bit disappointed because it didn’t look very special. After taking a bite… we were so impressed! The bread was very crunchy but still maintained a chewy texture and the tangy and buttery cheese was perfectly melted. Paired with the grilled cheese was their Vegan Tomato Soup and it was also delicious. The combo also came with a carrot and 2 celery sticks but I think we ate the carrot before I had a chance to take the photo… lol.
Look at the cheese… look at the crispy bread! If I lived closer and wasn’t so afraid of driving that winding road, I could imagine just going to Muir Woods for lunch. The setting + the food = amazing experience.
